Why Your Kids Don’t Want Your Photos…

“My kids won’t want any of this.”

I hear that statement from clients all the time. As they look at boxes of prints, albums, slides, and hard drives, they often assume these memories will eventually be thrown away.

But after years of helping families organize and preserve their photo collections, I’ve learned something important:

It’s usually not the photos people don’t want.

It’s the burden.

Many of us have inherited a box of old family photos and felt overwhelmed. Hundreds of unidentified faces. No dates. No names. No stories. It can feel more like a project than a gift.

What people do want are the stories and connections behind the photos.

They want to see what Grandma looked like as a teenager. They want photos of their parents when they were young. They want to recognize family traits, old homes, vacations, celebrations, and everyday moments that tell the story of where they came from.

A photo that seems ordinary today can become priceless years from now when it’s one of the few images of someone who is no longer here.

The challenge is that the longer photos remain unorganized, the more context is lost. Names are forgotten. Dates become uncertain. Stories disappear.

Future generations may not want every photo.

They don’t need to.

They just need to be able to find and understand the meaningful ones.

By organizing your photos now, you’re giving your family something far more valuable than a collection of images.

You’re giving them a connection to their history.

And that’s a gift most families don’t realize they’ll treasure until it’s too late to ask the questions.
