The First Step to PHoto Organzing: Know What You Have

How Many Photos Do You Actually Have? (And Where Are They All Hiding?)

One of the most common things we hear is:
“I don’t even know where to start… my photos are everywhere.”

And in most cases, that’s exactly the problem.

Photos tend to live in more places than we realize—your phone, your computer, maybe an old laptop, a hard drive, and a cloud account or two. When it all feels scattered and undefined, even thinking about organizing can feel overwhelming.

The good news is, you don’t need to organize anything yet.

The first step is simply getting a clear, low-pressure snapshot of what you have.

Start With a Simple Photo Check-In

This isn’t a project—it’s just a quick check-in you can do in about 10–15 minutes.

1. List the places your photos might live
Think through your phone, computer, older devices, external drives, and any cloud storage. No digging—just a simple list.

2. Take a quick look
Open each one and get a rough sense of how many photos are there. It doesn’t need to be exact—an estimate is enough.

3. Notice what you see
Where are most of your photos? Are there duplicates across devices? Are there places you forgot about?

Why This Helps

For most people, the overwhelm isn’t just the number of photos—it’s not knowing what they’re dealing with.

Once you can see your collection more clearly, it starts to feel more manageable. You’ve taken something vague and made it visible—and that’s a meaningful first step.

What Comes Next

From here, resist the urge to tackle everything at once.

Instead, choose just one place to start—usually your phone or your most recent photos—and begin there. Small steps make this process much more doable.

If you come across older hard drives from previous computers and aren’t sure how to access them, that’s very common—and something we’re always happy to help with.

If You’d Like Help

If this quick check-in made you realize you’d rather have some guidance, we’re always here to help—whether that’s creating a plan or taking the process off your plate entirely.
